The amount of medical information in textbooks and medical literature is simply too vast to use for USMLE exam review. And scientific information, especially at the cellular/molecular level, is too rapidly-expanding to know what is new to add to the already voluminous information. The volume is therefore too large and cumbersome. And while some information is tested routinely, a sizeable amount of other information appear rarely, if ever, on the USMLE.
It is amazing how so many students think that they can become well prepared for USMLE Step I exam by simply “doing questions” even if they lack understanding of some key concepts. Many foreign medical students and graduates study by just selecting question bank components at any given time and learn from it by simply memorizing. A lot of students from the off-shore med schools come out of their 5th term (or 5th semester) and use this method without realizing that a sound foundation in certain fundamentals is a prerequisite to using these question banks. Such a method may work well for those have the good foundation in basic sciences.
